New Stoke centre will be its hub It’s essential a new community centre in Stoke will be the hub for the region’s largest suburb, says councillor Pete Rainey. Submissions on the Nelson City Council’s draft annual plan closed yesterday and included is $200,000 for investigation and design work towards a new facility on Greenmeadows. The facility will be made possible because of money the Stoke Rugby Club raised from selling its clubrooms earlier this year. That money is likely to be put together with funds from the council, says Pete, chair of community services. “We haven’t worked with any groups other than the rugby club at this stage, but we’re very keen to have as many groups as possible to make the facility as useful as possible.” The council is keen to see it used by sporting groups as well as youth groups and senior citizen groups. “We’ve got to make sure it has as much buy-in as possi-

ble,” says Pete. Support for the facility around the council table is strong and mayor Rachel Reese was a strong supporter of it during the election last year. Pete says the facility will be a joint effort with the Stoke Rugby Club and made no bones about their contribution. “The rugby club have been very successful in what they’ve done with their clubrooms and that will make a huge difference to the project. I’ve been very impressed with the club’s attitude to this, for them it’s not just about rugby, but about community.” He says its “essential” that it becomes a “hub” for Stoke. “There’s no point building a facility like this if it doesn’t grab the imagination of the community. They’re got to not only use it, but feel respect for it and take ownership of it.”

Wineries celebrate ‘stellar vintage’ Nelson wineries are looking forward to another “stellar vintage” after finishing harvesting this month, but it was a close call with growers just missing the wet weather that ruined tonnes of grapes in Marlborough. Chairman of the Nelson Winegrowers Association Richard Flatman, says the quality of this year’s grapes is exceptional after vineyards experienced perfect growing conditions throughout the season. But Richard, who is the viticulturalist at Neudorf Vineyards, concedes Nelson growers were lucky they were able to start harvesting early and beat the rain that inundated the country in April. “We had 247 millimetres of rain at Neudorf from April 8 to April 20 and that’s when we would normally be a week into picking. We were just lucky we had that wonderful Indian Summer and were about two weeks early.

We had ripe fruit with nice flavours and no disease, and quite a large crop.” Waimea Estates general manager Ben Bolitho says they faced a race against time to keep up with ripening grapes, harvesting and processing around the clock in the final 10 days. Ben says Waimea Estates was also fortunate they had installed some new processing and refrigeration equipment for this season, because that allowed them to finish the harvest before the rain. “Our biggest day this season was 225 tonnes and before that it had been 150 tonnes, so we would have struggled to beat the rain without the new gear. “Everything we picked was ripe and ready

for harvest.” Ben says Waimea Estates harvested 2400 tonnes, up from last season’s 1700 tonne and similar to the quantity harvested in 2011. However, Richard says Marlborough “got really slammed” by the rain because they had experienced cooler weather and were harvesting later than Nelson. The prolonged rain caused grapes to swell, losing flavour and intensity and then split, making them prone to disease and rotting. Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says the rain hit the later part of the vintage although it was “too early to say” how that impacted on the harvest. He says there have been “a few distressing tales of some growers”, especially in the later-ripening regions of Marlborough. However, Marcus says growers and winemakers are still optimistic about the vintage because of the quality of grapes harvested before the rain.

The committee – including former councillors Derek Shaw and Gail Collingwood and chair Oke Blaikie – said there was limited evidence in the objections that the store should not open. They also noted that there was no objection from the police, medical officer of health or Nelson City Council. Councillor Matt Lawery, who objected to the licence being issued, says he’s disappointed the liquor store will open and is warning people to get ready

for more liquor stores opening in the city. “The government claimed the new act would give communities greater say on local licensing matters. That has not happened in the case of Gloucester St. The result is a gift to the liquor industry and a blow to the community that may have serious long term consequences,” he says. “Despite the fact there are already five off-licences within walking distance of Gloucester St, the committee concluded that another one would not be a problem. The message that comes through the decision is that the licensing committee is not prepared to tackle the issue of liquor store density. It seems that if you apply, you are likely to be granted a licence.”

A controversial new liquor store has been granted consent to open its doors, despite 29 objections and concerns around the number of businesses already selling alcohol in the area. The Nelson District Licensing Committee last week granted an off licence to SRS Ghuman and Sons Ltd to open a bottle store on Gloucester St, the first decision made by the new committee following the introduction of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 late last year. But it added several conditions, including not selling single bottles of beer or RTDs and no advertising on the roadside. The new store is currently under construction and will be called The Bottle Store. Owner Rambir Singh owns around ten discount-style bottle stores in the North Island, but says he won’t run his Nelson business that way and will be aiming at the higher end of the market. Other conditions include not selling legal highs, no pallets of

Council halts legal high meeting A “surprise” move by the government to ban all legal highs has forced Nelson City Council to postpone its planned meeting on the issue. The meeting was scheduled for today but was postponed yesterday after the announcement was made by the minister in charge, Peter Dunn, on Sunday

afternoon. The council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee were to hear submissions to the Local Approved Products Policy and was coming under pressure to ban the highs at a regional level. “This postponement is done in light of the surprise announcement from gov-

ernment on 27 April in relation to banning Psychoactive Substances,” said a council staff member. The date for any future meeting to hear submissions is yet to be determined, and will be advertised in due course once the government’s stance becomes clearer.

Support for wood burners heating up Andrew Board A push for wood burners to be allowed in Nelson homes is firing up. Grey Power says wood burners should be allowed in homes that its owners have been told they can’t, because the cost of electric heating is too much for many, especially elderly people. And now an online petition has been set up attempting to persuade councillors to “sensibly review and look to relax the current restrictions” around the use of wood burners. Nelson City Council will meet on the issue next week and Grey Power Nelson president Neville Male is urging Nelsonians to let councillors know their thoughts by calling their homes. “The council is considering lifting restrictions on the use of wood burners for the coming winter, but there are councillors still needing to be convinced and some are saying there are not enough ratepayers complaining to uplift the current draconian and unfair regulations,” says Neville. “Now is the time for you to tell

them how important it is that these regulations be changed.” NCC adopted a clean air policy a decade ago to clean up Nelson’s polluted air, especially in the valleys around Victory, Washington Valley and Bishopdale. That has been successful with the air quality much better than ten years ago. But Grey Power argues that as more people have installed heat pumps over fire places the cost has risen and is now unaffordable for many. Neville says he knows of some of his members who go to bed at 5pm wrapped in blankets to try and stay warm through the night. “It’s just not on. We can’t have people living like that in our city in 2014.” He says if those homeowners were allowed fires back in their homes, people would be able to keep warm because running a fire is cheaper and provides a better source of heat. Some councillors have already stated they’d like to see changes, but the chair of the committee in charge of the decision, Brian McGurk, told the Weekly last month that major changes before this winter would be unlikely.

Thousands filled Anzac Park, from the centre out, last Friday in what the regional RSA president called “bloody good to see”, but the best is yet to come. Community gets behind Ranui House The organisers of a fundraising drive for Ranui House in Christchurch are thrilled with the response. Last year Nelson Weekly told the story of Peter and Lynda Hanna. As Lynda fought a battle with cancer Peter stayed in Ranui House, an accommodation block near Christchurch Hospital, and quickly met a lot of other Nelsonians supporting their loved ones through a similar journey. When Peter and Lynda returned home, Peter wanted to do what he could to help the house that had been a huge help for him.

They organised a music concert, a golf fundraiser, a hangi and a quiz night, in total raising $34,965. “Ranui was just magic when I was there. I went there that afternoon and they sorted me out with a room, and it was just a few hundred metres from the hospital. It meant we didn’t have to think about accommodation, we could just concentrate on helping Lynda get well,” he says. The music concert fundraiser held last November raised $9000, the hangi at the Wanderers clubrooms in January raised $2100, the golf tournament in March

raised $11,400 and the quiz night this month at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms raised $8560. The remaining $3855 came from outside donations from people around the South Island. Lynda says the support of the community was fantastic and also thanked the Weekly for covering each of the fundraising events to help promote them. “Peter and I would like to thank you very much for your support. You have been really great to work with, this is all to the benefit of Ranui House.”

Men needed for social dancing Getting men on the dance floor is proving to be a bit of a challenge for a local social dancing group. Quick-stepping dancers from the Nelson Social Dancing Club are looking for new members, but in particular men, to join the club to boost numbers of their already popular dances. Baby sitters help with shopping

Shopping in the Richmond Mall has been a win-win situation for parents and their young children this week, with the parents dropping their kids off at the Eventful Kids activity centre while they go shopping. Children aged three to 12 have been enjoying a number of creative activities at the centre including colouring-in, Lego, puzzles and dress-up, while their parents and caregivers get a chance to participate in some kids-free shopping. The service

is free courtesy of the Richmond Mall, and playcentre’s supervisor Alana Caunter says they have been busy since opening up on Monday. “We had one mother who said she couldn’t get her kids to leave,” Alana says. “There’s so much for them to do and they have so much fun.” Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says they contracted Eventful Kids to run their mobile activity centre because they wanted to try something different these school

holidays. “This is the first time we have tried this and we have got a lot of positive feedback,” Belinda says. “We usually put on some holiday activities for the children and we thought this one would be so good for the parents as well.” Eventful Kids is open from 11am to 3pm each day this week. It can take up to 20 children at once and looks after children for up to one hour. The bad news for parents is that the service is only for the last week of the holidays.

Last week Nelson Bays staff police caught up with some young men we believe to be responsible for a string of burglaries in our area. We caught up with the suspects after a series of incidents in which they failed to stop for police and endangered their own and innocent members of the public’s lives by fleeing. Whenever a fleeing driver’s behaviour is considered to be a risk to the general public, police will use a range of tactics other than just chasing a fleeing driver to stop the vehicle. Most often this will include laying road spikes, which as was the case in this incident, are very effective in slowing a vehicle in a safe manner. The spikes slowly deflate the vehicles tyres, which ensures the driver doesn’t suddenly lose control, and they will generally either give up the fight, or try to dump the vehicle and run. I cannot overstate what an irresponsible risk any fleeing driver is taking! What is really satisfying about this work is that firstly, no one was injured in the apprehension of these suspects and, secondly, over recent days we have been able to reunite people with thousands of dollars worth of stolen property. While it is not for me to comment on the potential punishment the courts hand out, what I do know is that, if convicted, they won’t be at liberty to continue offending. Finally, I’d just like to remind people to take a look at the Snap website (snap.org. nz) where you can store an online asset list. This is really useful for the recovery of stolen property should you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of being the victim of a burglary. Snap is a NZ Police initiative and the service is free.

Support for the Anzacs: I was disappointed to read in Street Talk that none of the Nelsonians interviewed for Street Talk would be attending an Anzac Day Service (although one would have had they not been working, one might of depending on the weather, and one was travelling overseas). When I was a kid I always found it very moving to see servicemen and servicewomen parading with their medals on Anzac Day to honour their fallen comrades. I didn’t know too much about the history but wanted to thank them. I never thought at the time that one day I would become one of those servicemen too, and that adults and children would watch me parade with others and clap and cheer, and say thanks. I proudly served for 27 years and was privileged to have been deployed on operational and peacekeeping missions.

Mike Corkill has already done the Christmas shopping for his five children – whether or not he’ll be around to watch them open their presents is far from certain though. Doctors have said he may not live that long. Mike, 44, has a pulmonary arterial hypertension, which basically means the arteries in his lungs are closing and not enough blood is pumped to the rest of his body. It killed his birth mother and grandfather and doctors say unless he has a lung transplant it will kill him as well. But Mike isn’t eligible for a lung transplant in New Zealand because one out of seven patients who have the surgery end up having kidney problems, which means living on dialysis. Because lung donors are so rare, New Zealand doctors will only give them to patients who will have a certain “high quality of life” after the operation. Outside of New Zealand, Mike can go to Australia for the operation but the cost is $350,000, or India at a cost of $100,000. He says he’s determined to do anything to live so he can watch his kids grow up, including the youngest who is just nine years old and the operation still gives him a six out of seven chance of living a happy and longer life. “It’s gut-wrenching. I want to be able to go to their 21st birthdays, weddings, watch them have children of their own. I want to take them camping and kick a soccer ball with them. But I can’t.” So he’s calling on Nelson. Mike was a labourer and keen tennis player before his condition forced him from his job and admits

But I need help.” He is hoping people may be able to come forward with ideas for fundraisers, or even donate some money into a bank account he set up just last week. “I’m keen to hear from anyone. Someone mentioned a charity dinner but I don’t know how to go about it.” If Mike – who has never smoked – can raise the money, he’ll fly to India where the hospital and doctors are world-class and have been vetted by his local doctors. The reason it’s cheaper is because there are simply more donors and the associated costs are less. Mike says he’s done his research and the Indian hospital checks out. He doesn’t have much time though and the stress and strain on the faces of his mother, wife and children are obvious. His wife Julie-Ann says it’s been difficult dealing with Mike’s health as he needs to be breathing through an oxygen machine 16 hours a day. I’m a nervous driver can you help me? With the changes in give way rules recently, and an increase in the amount of traffic on the roads, a lot of drivers have become nervous drivers. Richmond Athletic's most famous player Jeremy Brockie will be passing on some of his footballing wisdom to the next generation of All Whites, at the club's junior holiday coaching clinic at Jubilee Park South this Wednesday. Richmond is running the holiday programme from Monday to Thursday this week and Jeremy is making the trip from Wellington, where he is based with the A-League team Phoenix, back to his other home ground at Jubilee Park. Club president Stu Reid says Jeremy is the club's ambassador and always tries to attend one of the junior holiday coaching programmes every year. "It's lucky for us that the Phoenix are out [of the ALeague play-offs] so he can come down this week," Stu says. "He's such a good role Jeremy Brockie. model and he really enjoys working with the young players." Mitchell Drummond’s rugby dream just keeps getting better. The former Nelson College 1st XV captain and current Crusader, was selected in the New Zealand under-20 team last week. He will play in the Junior World Championship to be held in Auckland in June, alongside the country’s other top young stars. Mitchell was the only Nelsonian selected in the team, with David Havilli missing

selection after being involved in the wider training squad and trials. The squad was selected following a trial in Palmerston North last Monday. He says it’s been a surreal 12 months. “When it all started to happen, I went from banging nails in one day, doing my building, to a professional footy player. Life changed pretty quickly but I’m loving it.” He says he was determined to make the NZ under-20 squad after missing out on

the NZ Schools’ team, two years ago. “My goal was always to make the 20s team. It’s going to be pretty cool playing with guys I’ve gone through the grades Mitchell with and it’s just going to Drummond. be exciting. I can’t wait to get stuck into it and pull on that black jersey.”

Mitchell is the only halfback in the team that is contracted to a Super 15 team and is likely to play alongside captain and Blues first-five Simon Hickey. He says being a part of the Crusaders environment has been a huge advantage. “Being around guys like Andy Ellis and Willie Heinz, it’s hard not to learn. I know I see things on the rugby field that I didn’t see 12 months ago. The amount I’ve learnt has been huge.”

The Suburban Club hosted the seventh National Pool Competition over the weekend. Competitors from Auckland right down to Invercargill made the trip to Nelson, where the Suburban Club hosted the tournament for the third time. Nelson had eight players competing in the competition with Wiremu Maxwell standing out as a top performer, despite losing to previous winner Daniel Robinson from Tokaroa. New adventure race gets tick of approval Nelson's top international adventure racers made light work of the inaugural Absolute Wilderness Adventure Race based in Murchison, charging through the 100 kilometre course, including a steep ascent of the Mole Tops in just under eight hours. Sophie Hart, Nick Ross and Brent Edwards won the three-person teams race which included a rafting stage down the Buller River, two mountainbike stages and a rugged 20 kilometre alpine trek, in seven hours and 56 minutes. Ash and Naomi Whitehead and Dan Moore finished second in eight hours 46 minutes just edging out Josh Findlay, Ingrid Richter and Trevor Voyce by one minute after a sprint finish. Event race organiser and world champion adventure racer Nathan Fa'avae was impressed with the fastest teams after earlier predicting a winning time of around 11 hours. He joked that the winning team's name, Not Normal, was apt after they completed a super-fast trek to make a winning break on the chasers. "I was bit surprised at how fast they went but they had perfect conditions. It also helped that there were three very strong teams pushing hard at the front end of the race," Nathan said. The six-hour men's adventure race was won by Woodies, Nigel Kelly, Malcolm Edridge and Brad Wallace, who made an impressive adventure racing debut completing the course in 4 hours 46 minutes. Ben Moulan, Meg Bichard and Ed Kerly won the mixed adventure race in 5 hours 8 minutes while Waimea College students

Nathan Sturrock, Jackson Carver and Lachlan Brownlie won the youth section in a fast 4 hours 50 minutes. Although the top teams made the race look easy, Nathan says there were plenty of big challenges on both courses and some of the teams had a long day at the office. Check point five in the adventure race had a lot of teams running around in circles while four or five teams in the expedition race took the scenic route to the Mole Hut after missing a side stream. "When the teams got the maps and the course they thought it looked fairly tame but they soon found out they were going into real wilderness country. I think that's why people enjoyed it so much because they went places they'd never been before and had a real adventure." Sixty-five teams competed in the race and Nathan says that has encouraged the organisers to make the Absolute Wilderness a regular event. He says next year's race will again be held in Murchison which is a perfect place for adventure racing. "I went up to the Mole Tops when I was in the fourth form at Nelson College and it blew me away. I've always thought it would be a great place for an adventure race and now, finally, we managed it."

Nelson Rowing Club’s successful season was capped off on Sunday with the announcement that two club members have been selected for the New Zealand Junior Rowing team. Waimea College’s Sean Ducray and Nelson College’s Olly Stephens will race in the quadruple sculls at the World Junior Rowing Champs in Hamburg, Germany in August. News of their selection came after a weeklong trial at Lake Karapiro. “We’ve all had a hard week,” says Sean. “It’s been pretty close; the competition was so close they were still testing us on Sunday morning. It was pretty hard work.” The NZ Junior team will assemble at Lake Karapiro at the Rowing New Zealand High Performance Centre for six weeks from June 8 to train as a squad.

While they are training they will continue their studies at St Peters School in Cambridge and be living in the Rob Waddell Lodge on the shores of Lake Karapiro, where the New Zealand rowing team is based.

The World Junior Rowing Championships will be held from August 6-10 this year where the two Nelson rowers will be competing against 600 top junior athletes from over 50 nations around the world.

The snapper still haven’t quite moved north even though the temperature has dropped, and are still around in Tasman Bay. There are a few large models still being caught in deeper water as well as fish up to 50cm being caught around Haulashore Island and the Boulder Bank. Cable Bay, Pepin Island and Delaware Bay are all still fishing well. Anything from gurnard, blue cod to terakihi, kahawai and snapper. The sounds are starting to fish really well with some excellent big late autumn snapper being landed. Beatrix Bay has fired up and Kenepuru while still a bit hit and miss will produce some stunning fish throughout May. Unfortunately the spikey dogs have also moved into the neighbourhood and taken up residence, along with their partners in crime, the razor gang. If your gear can survive these unwanted pests there is definitely some great fishing on offer. The kingfish have not really arrived at Stephen’s passage just yet but make sure you are well prepared with your gear to take on these beasts of the sea. Get into your local tackle shop and spend as much money as you can afford to make sure your gear will enable you to land these very powerful fish. Groper have been caught in the last couple of weeks out off Stephens Island, and of course there are plenty of blue cod to be had anywhere along the coastline. With another week still left in the holidays, this can be a great time to get the kids out fishing. Even though the weather is colder it is generally much more settled with little wind and slight seas and can be a great source of entertainment. Taking kids fishing doesn’t necessarily
